Why these names?
Ethan – We just like the sound. According to baby name book, it means “firm, strong”. We didn’t know it was such a popular name until I looked it up just now… Baby Name Wizard. Our first choice was ‘Aiden’, but my cousin beat us to it by a few months.
孟宸 (Mèng chén) – My parents went to a naming specialist, who takes in account of birth date, time, weight, etc to come up with a Chinese character stroke count. Then picked the words based on some additional properties of each word. He gave us a list of names, none of which we liked directly, but somehow we arrived at these 2 words.
- 孟 Mèng – follows the name of a rather famous ancient Chinese philosopher 孟子 Mencius of 300BC “who is the most famous Confucian after Confucius himself” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mencius
- 宸 chén – the word can be used to represent emperor or emperor housing or great house. We have no such aspiration for him, but it is considered a “good” word. One important aspect is that the word itself has a “house” part, which the naming specialist thought it is import to have for those born in the Snake year (reasoning: snakes can move a lot, they need a house to contain them…)
- Overall – stroke count isn’t too high (thus not too difficult to write), and it’s not too common of a name.
